Trailblazers Fall in Road Test at Olney Central
OLNEY, Ill. — Vincennes University Baseball dropped a tightly contested midweek road game Wednesday, falling 7–6 to Olney Central College. The Trailblazers move to 11-19 overall following the non-conference matchup.
After falling behind 1–0 in the first, VU answered with a run in the second before erupting for five runs in the third to build a 6–3 advantage. The Trailblazers carried a 6–4 lead into the bottom of the ninth before Olney Central scored three runs to walk off with the 7–6 win.
Head coach Chris Barney, in his 18th season leading the Trailblazers, noted the team's competitiveness but pointed to missed opportunities late as the difference. "We had a very good outing from five of our six pitchers and held a 6–4 lead going into the bottom of the ninth," Barney said. "We have to do a better job taking advantage of the outs the opposing team gives us."
Freshman Matthew Everroad led the offense with a 3-for-5 performance, including a double, while sophomore Evan Doran tripled and drove in two runs. Freshman Braden Casebier added a hit and two RBIs, and freshman Grady Hartman contributed an RBI on a sacrifice fly. Sophomore Jevan Andrews recorded a hit and a stolen base, while freshman Tommy Holman added a hit and scored a run as VU totaled eight hits and drew five walks.
On the mound, freshman Kaagen Kendall allowed one run over two innings to start, followed by freshman Elijah Papalios, who worked two innings and allowed two runs — none earned. Freshman Tyler Singleton added two innings of relief, surrendering one run, while freshman Palmer Schiff tossed a scoreless inning to help maintain the lead. Freshman Parker Clarida (0-1) was charged with the loss in relief.
"We missed some plays defensively and had opportunities offensively and on the bases to apply more pressure," Barney added. "The energy was good — now it's about learning how to close the door."
VU will return to Midwest Athletic Conference play this weekend in a four-game series against Danville Area Community College. The Trailblazers will open with a doubleheader Saturday, March 28 in Danville, with first pitch set for 2 p.m. EST, before returning home Sunday, March 29 for a doubleheader at Jerry Blemker Field beginning at 2 p.m. EST.
