Trailblazers Fall to No. 24 Wabash Valley
VINCENNES, Ind. — Vincennes University Baseball dropped a non-conference matchup Tuesday evening, falling 14–4 to NJCAA Division I No. 24 Wabash Valley College at Jerry Blemker Field. The Trailblazers move to 13-22 overall and remain 7-9 in Region 24/MWAC play.
Wabash Valley set the tone early, scoring in six of the seven innings played, including a four-run first inning and adding on consistently throughout to build separation.
Head Coach Chris Barney, in his 18th season leading the club, pointed to pitching and execution as key factors in the outcome. "We were not able to sustain much tonight against a very good Wabash Valley team, allowing them to score in six of the seven innings," Barney said. "It starts on the mound. Starting pitchers have to set the tone early, and relievers have to find a way to get the first hitter out."
Sophomore Evan Doran led the Trailblazers offensively, recording two hits, including a double, and drove in a run while freshman Tannar Patterson recorded a hit and an RBI. Freshman Braden Casebier added a hit and an RBI, and sophomore Jevan Andrews collected a hit and scored a run. Freshman Maddox Ray also added a hit and scored, while freshman Aiden Vaught crossed the plate once as Vincennes finished with eight hits.
On the mound, freshman Tyler Singleton (1-1) took the loss after allowing four runs in the opening inning. Freshman Hayden May followed with two innings, allowing three runs, while freshman Carter Williams, freshman Palmer Schiff, freshman Jackson Bauer, and sophomore Cole Trevino each saw time in relief as the Trailblazers used multiple arms throughout the game.
Barney also noted areas that must improve moving forward. "Allowing teams to score on wild pitches, giving extra outs on plays that should be made, and walking hitters by not throwing enough strikes leads to not much success," Barney added. "We have to clean those things up and play a better brand of baseball."
VU utilized its roster depth throughout the game, with 18 players recording an at-bat as the Trailblazers managed workload ahead of the upcoming conference series.
VU returns to Midwest Athletic Conference play April 6–7 in a four-game series against Parkland College. The Trailblazers will open with a doubleheader Monday, April 6 in Champaign, with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m. EST, before returning home Tuesday, April 7 for a doubleheader at Jerry Blemker Field beginning at 1 p.m. EST.
