Trailblazers Roll Past Kaskaskia at Home
VINCENNES, Ind. — Vincennes University Baseball put together a complete performance at Jerry Blemker Field on Thursday night, defeating Kaskaskia College 14–4 in non-conference play. The Trailblazers improve to 15-30 overall and remain 8-16 in Region 24/MWAC competition.
VU broke the game open early, scoring twice in the first before erupting for six runs in the second inning, highlighted by timely hitting and disciplined at-bats. The Trailblazers added another six-run frame in the fifth to create separation and secure the victory.
Head Coach Chris Barney, in his 18th season, emphasized the total team effort and balanced contributions across the roster. "It was a very good team win with contributions from nine different pitchers," Barney said. "We had seven different players record hits and four different players drove in runs."
Freshman Dillon Warnick led the offense, going 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a walk, while sophomore Evan Doran matched him with a 3-for-4 performance. Freshman Matthew Everroad went 2-for-5 with a double and two RBIs, and freshman Palmer Schiff finished 2-for-4 with three RBIs.
Freshman Lucas Frack added a 2-for-2 effort with an RBI, while freshman Tannar Patterson went 1-for-2 with a walk and scored twice. Freshman Ethan Papalios went 1-for-1 with three walks and scored two runs as VU totaled 14 hits and drew 10 walks in the game.
Barney also highlighted key defensive plays that helped maintain momentum. "We made some outstanding defensive plays in the fifth inning," Barney added. "Braden Casebier made a diving play at shortstop and threw a runner out at third, and Jevan Andrews followed that with a diving catch in center field to end the inning."
On the mound, freshman Hayden May (1-3) earned his first collegiate win, allowing one run over one inning. VU utilized nine pitchers in the game, combining to limit Kaskaskia to four runs on seven hits. Freshman Palmer Schiff delivered 1.2 scoreless innings in relief, while freshman Tyler Singleton and sophomore Cole Trevino each added scoreless innings as part of the combined effort.
Barney noted the importance of building momentum heading back into conference play. "We were able to put up some crooked numbers, especially in the second inning with six runs coming with two outs," Barney said. "Hopefully this gives us some momentum and a good feeling going into our conference series this weekend."
VU returns to Midwest Athletic Conference play April 18–19 with a four-game series at Spoon River College. The Trailblazers will open with a doubleheader Saturday, April 18, with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m. EST, followed by another doubleheader Sunday, April 19, also beginning at 1 p.m. EST.
