No. 4 Trailblazers Roll Past Truman to Stay Perfect at 6–0
VINCENNES, Ind. — The No. 4 Vincennes University Men's Basketball team kept its undefeated start intact Tuesday night, powering past Harry S. Truman College for an 87–51 victory inside the P.E. Complex to improve to 6–0 overall.
VU seized control early, building a 50–23 halftime lead through crisp ball movement, pace, and defensive pressure. The Trailblazers shot 45.9 percent from the field and 45.5 percent from three, while holding Truman to 34 percent shooting overall and just 31.7 percent inside the arc. The rebounding battle tilted heavily in VU's favor as well, with the Trailblazers dominating the glass 48–27 and turning 14 Truman turnovers into 17 points. VU also continued its efficient, unselfish style with 25 assists on 34 made field goals, while committing just nine turnovers.
Freshman point guard Drae Vasser led the scoring effort with 17 points, 6 assists, and 3 rebounds, connecting on 5-of-7 from deep. Sophomore Jalen Calloway added 10 points and four assists, while sophomore guard Dayton Williams delivered another all-around performance with 9 points, 7 rebounds, 6 assists, and 2 steals in 17 minutes of play. Inside, freshman Lorenzo Malagnini scored 10 points on 5-of-7 shooting while freshman Jevon Guess grabbed 7 rebounds to go with 5 points. The backcourt duo of freshman Alex Montes and sophomore Jaloni Johnson combined for 17 points and 8 rebounds off the bench, helping VU maintain separation throughout the second half.
After the game, NJCAA Hall of Fame Head Coach Todd Franklin emphasized that the goal was not simply to win, but to develop the roster and reinforce habits that carry into the heart of the season. "Part of it is that in games like that, you're going to give guys an opportunity to play," Franklin said. "We're early in the year. We don't know yet who we're going to be playing in the second half of the year. If guys improve, who's going to be the guy on January 25? There is no such thing as garbage time — our guys are expected to play the right way all the way to the end."
While the Trailblazers controlled the game comfortably, Franklin noted the performance was still uneven in stretches. "I don't think this was our best effort, but it was what it was," he said. "I thought when we were together as a group, we were pretty solid. We missed some shots we normally make, and our intensity wasn't always where it needed to be. But a lot of that's on me because of how much I subbed tonight. It's hard to get rhythm that way."
Defensively, Franklin saw moments that matched program expectations and others that will demand improvement. "We were a little lax getting out to a few of their threes, and we got beat on penetration a couple times," he said. "Overall, though, we should have held them under 50 — and if we'd have kept our main guys in, we would have."
Vincennes will now take its unbeaten record on the road for the first time this season, traveling to Triton College — a 29–6 team a year ago that fell two points shy of an Elite Eight appearance in the NJCAA National Tournament — on Saturday, November 15 at 4 p.m. ET. With VU's first six contests all at home, Franklin stressed that the upcoming test will provide a different kind of challenge. "Saturday will be a very different thing," he said. "We're going to play a national power at their place with a quick turnaround. We had to defend something these first six times — now we get to go try to take something Saturday."
