No. 1 Trailblazers Grind Out Defensive Win to Move to 10–0
VINCENNES, Ind. — The No. 1 ranked Vincennes University Men's Basketball team improved to 10–0 Wednesday night, grinding out a 58–46 home victory over visiting NJCAA DII No. 12 and previously undefeated Henry Ford College inside the P.E. Complex. In a matchup between two fast-paced, high-scoring teams, the Trailblazers instead won with defense, holding Henry Ford — a program averaging nearly 100 points per game — to just 46, their lowest output of the season.
On a night when VU's offense never fully found its rhythm, VU controlled the game defensively, limiting Henry Ford to 26.8 percent shooting from the field and only 2-of-20 from three-point range, while also securing a 50–34 advantage on the glass, holding Henry Ford to eight offensive rebounds and just three second-chance points all night.
Offensively, VU relied on three scorers to generate nearly all of its production. Sophomore Jalen Calloway led all players with 23 points on 9-of-18 shooting to go with six rebounds and two assists. Freshman Drae Vasser continued his steady early-season form with 20 points, including 14 in the first half, while adding eight rebounds and two assists. Sophomore Dayton Williams rounded out the scoring trio with 15 points and nine rebounds, providing needed scoring physicality at the rim.
Despite the win, 16th-year NJCAA Hall of Fame Head Coach Todd Franklin made clear the performance did not meet program standards on the offensive end. "If you told me we were going to hold a team that scores 100 points a game to 46, I would have thought we'd have had a runaway victory tonight," Franklin said. "Defensively we did a good job — they didn't score much — but offensively, it was sloppy. We weren't sharp catching it, cutting, sealing, running.
Offensively, the Trailblazers finished the night shooting 30.8% from the field and 21.4% from three, but continued to generate production through extra-effort plays, converting 14 second-chance points on the strength of an active offensive rebounding effort. Despite an overall offensive execution night that fell below their usual standard, VU's ability to extend possessions and capitalize on the glass helped create the separation needed in a defensive-driven game.
Franklin emphasized that the lack of execution stemmed from fundamentals more than game plan. "We need to become good basketball players. We need to become a good basketball team," he said. "Some guys are worried about being undefeated or being ranked No. 1. What's going to happen in March is we won't be playing in Kansas — much less winning in Kansas — if we're sloppy like that."
Vincennes will next host Elgin Community College on Saturday, December 6 at 7 p.m. ET as they look to remain unbeaten heading into Region 24 play.
