VU Basketball Sweeps Region 24 Player of the Week Honors
VINCENNES, Ind. — The Vincennes University basketball programs swept the NJCAA Region 24 Player of the Week honors for the week of December 7, as announced December 15. Sophomore guard Dayton Williams earned the men's honor, while sophomore forward Iris Comesaña-Varela was recognized on the women's side following standout performances in a pair of Region 24 victories for each program.
Williams helped lead the No. 2–ranked Trailblazers to a 2–0 week in Region 24 play, extending VU's unbeaten start to the season to 13-0 overall. In a region road win at John A. Logan College on December 10, Williams delivered a strong scoring performance with 24 points, shooting 8-for-14 from the field and a perfect 3-for-3 from three-point range, while adding three rebounds, two assists, and one steal in an 87–80 victory. He followed that effort with a strong all-around performance in a 77–59 home win over Lincoln Trail College on December 13, finishing with 17 points, 11 rebounds, five assists, one steal, and one block to help control the game on both ends of the floor. For the week, Williams averaged 20.5 points, 7.0 rebounds, and 3.5 assists, shooting a combined 15-28 from the field and 5-8 from three-point range.
On the women's side, Comesaña-Varela played a pivotal role in Vincennes' own 2–0 Region 24 week as the Trailblazers improved to 8-4 on the season. She opened the week with a team-high 19 points in a 64–41 road win at John A. Logan College on December 10, shooting 7-for-13 from the field and 5-for-9 from three-point range, while adding four rebounds, three assists, four steals, and one block. Comesaña-Varela followed with another efficient performance in an 85–35 home win over Lincoln Trail College on December 13, finishing with 18 points, eight rebounds, three assists, and four made three-pointers. For the week, Comesaña-Varela averaged 18.5 points, 6.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists, and 2.5 steals per game, while shooting a combined 14-26 from the field and 9-18 from three-point range.
Following a sweep of Region 24 weekly honors, the Trailblazers now look ahead to their next contests as the calendar turns. The women's basketball program will close out the 2025 calendar year at home on Wednesday, December 17, hosting Mineral Area College inside the P.E. Complex at 5:00 p.m. ET. The men's team will step away from competition through the holiday break before resuming play in 2026 at the Columbia State Classic in Columbia, Tennessee, opening the new year against Roane State Community College on Friday, January 2 at 5:00 p.m. ET, followed by a rematch with Columbia State Community College on Saturday, January 3 at 1:00 p.m. ET.
