Vasser, Calloway Each Score 30 as No. 2 Vincennes Tops Lake Land
VINCENNES, Ind. — The No. 2 Vincennes University Men's Basketball team delivered one of its strongest first halves of the season Wednesday night, defeating Lake Land College 90–66 in Region 24 play inside the P.E. Complex to improve to 25–1 overall and 11–1 in region action.
The Trailblazers seized control early, racing out to a commanding 52–25 halftime lead behind an explosive offensive opening that never allowed Lake Land to establish rhythm. VU connected on early perimeter opportunities and consistently generated open looks through execution, setting the tone for the remainder of the night.
Following the game, NJCAA Hall of Fame Head Coach Todd Franklin, in his 16th season leading the Trailblazers, credited the group's offensive execution in the opening half. "We shot the ball and executed some things that got guys open," Franklin said. "Drae hit shots early and it looks good when they go in. That first half was probably one of our better halves offensively."
Freshman guard Drae Vasser powered the early surge, scoring 20 of VU's first 22 points and finishing with 30 points and a team-high 12 rebounds, connecting on 9-of-14 from three-point range. Sophomore guard Jalen Calloway matched Vasser's offensive production with 30 points, shooting 10-of-17 from the field and a perfect 8-for-8 at the free-throw line, while adding six assists. Sophomore forward Prince Ojukwu added 10 points and seven rebounds for the Trailblazers.
The pair combined for one of the most productive scoring performances of the season as Vincennes placed two players at the 30-point mark. "I'll have to go back and check the records," Franklin said. "You don't see two guys score 30 in the same game very often. That's an impressive offensive effort."
VU finished the night shooting 46.2 percent from the field and 48.0 percent from three-point range, converting 12-of-25 from beyond the arc while recording 18 assists on 30 made baskets. The Trailblazers also controlled possessions with a 44–33 rebounding advantage and limited floor miscues with just seven turnovers. Lake Land attempted to generate momentum after halftime, but Vincennes answered with timely offense to seal the win.
While the first half provided separation, Franklin emphasized that the second-half performance fell short of the program's standard despite the comfortable margin. "We weren't serious enough in the second half," Franklin said. "It's too late in the year for that. There were times we stayed in jog mode instead of sprint mode. If you're trying to win championships, you have to be serious about every possession."
Despite the win, Franklin reiterated that consistency remains the focus as postseason play approaches. "We've got an opportunity," Franklin said. "There's not a dominant team out there, but if we want to make a run, we've got to get serious about the little things. Winning championships requires 40 minutes."
The Trailblazers now turn their attention to another significant Region 24 challenge, traveling to Kaskaskia College on Saturday, February 21 at 4 p.m. ET to inaugurate the Blue Devils' new facility. Vincennes won the first meeting between the teams earlier this season, 70–55, but Franklin expects a difficult test on the road. "They'll be excited opening that new gym," Franklin said. "It's going to take a full 40-minute effort to beat them."
