Hot Shooting Lifts Kaskaskia Past No. 2 Trailblazers
CENTRALIA, Ill. — The No. 2 Vincennes University Men's Basketball team suffered a 86–74 Region 24 road loss Saturday afternoon at Kaskaskia College, moving to 25–2 overall and 11–2 in region play.
VU battled throughout the opening half in a tightly contested matchup, trailing just 31–28 at halftime before Kaskaskia gained separation after the break. The Blue Devils capitalized on offensive efficiency and free-throw opportunities in the second half, outscoring the Trailblazers 55–46 over the final 20 minutes to secure the home victory.
The difference proved evident in shooting efficiency. Kaskaskia converted 60.8 percent from the field, including an impressive 67.4 percent inside the arc, while Vincennes shot only 37.5 percent overall and 35.3 percent from three-point range. The Blue Devils also made the most of trips to the free-throw line, converting 22-of-29 attempts, compared to VU's 8-of-12, allowing the home side to steadily build momentum.
Despite holding an 18–9 edge in points off turnovers and a 15–7 advantage in second-chance scoring behind aggressive offensive rebounding, Kaskaskia controlled key stretches through tempo and transition play, finishing with a 16–6 advantage in transition points, while also outscoring VU 44-38 in points in the paint, as the Blue Devils turned interior scoring and second-half execution into separation down the stretch.
Individually, freshman guard Drae Vasser led all scorers with 27 points, shooting 10-of-19 from the field and 3-of-7 from beyond the arc, while adding five assists and four rebounds. Sophomore guards Jalen Calloway and Dayton Williams each added 12 points, with Williams contributing nine rebounds and five assists to impact multiple areas of the game
VU will now return home to continue Region 24 play, hosting Olney Central College on Wednesday, February 25 at 7 p.m. ET inside the P.E. Complex. The Trailblazers defeated Olney Central earlier this season on the road, 82–57 on Janurary 21. The contest will also serve as Community School Night, welcoming local school-age students for an evening of games, contests, prizes, and family-friendly activities.
