Bio

James Howard enters the season focused on steady improvement as a sprinter. Competing primarily in sprint events, his individual goal is simple and direct: work hard and get faster. From a team standpoint, his emphasis is on unity and effort, prioritizing being a true team that competes and improves together. His most memorable athletic moments came in high school, including qualifying for regionals in the 200 meters as a junior and recording an interception during his senior football season.

James is motivated by a strong desire to succeed and avoid failure, drawing drive from personal accountability and persistence. He lives by the advice, “Do the next best thing,” and approaches training with a mindset centered on discipline and consistency. Since arriving at Vincennes, he has learned how to interact confidently with new people and adapt to unfamiliar environments.

Academically, James is pursuing a Machinery Repair Assistant Certificate and plans to work in industrial maintenance following graduation. While he has not yet identified a favorite class, he values hands-on learning and preparation for a stable, skill-based career path.

Away from competition, James enjoys working on cars, collecting comics and sneakers, watching movies and cartoons, working out, running, and building things. He lists pizza as his favorite food and brownies as his preferred snack. He enjoys watching football and basketball, names Southpaw as his favorite movie, and says he can’t imagine a week without milk. He is often described with a simple “wow” when people first meet him, reflecting a quiet but noticeable presence.

James chose Vincennes University as an opportunity to continue competing while developing practical skills for his future, embracing the chance to grow both athletically and personally.

Coach Mangan on James...

"Better known as “Elmo” to teammates, family and friends, he is the consummate teammate!"
