Bio
Jacob Kusbel enters the season focused on continued development in the middle-distance events. Competing in the 800 meters, his primary individual goal is to set a new personal record while building consistency at the collegiate level. His most memorable athletic moment came in high school, where he recorded one of the top 400-meter times at Valparaiso High School, a performance that highlighted his speed and potential transitioning into the 800.
Jacob approaches athletics with a straightforward, effort-based mindset, living by the advice to “do your best” and never give up. Often immediately noticed for his height, he brings a calm, steady presence to training and competition. While still adjusting to the collegiate environment, he remains focused on putting consistent work into both practice and performance.
Academically, Jacob majors in Building Information Modeling/Architecture and plans to complete two years at Vincennes before finishing his degree elsewhere. He lists English as his favorite class at VU and values the balance between technical coursework and general education as part of his long-term career path in architecture.
Away from the track, Jacob enjoys road and mountain biking, golf, and video gaming. He lists deep-dish pizza as his favorite food and Fruity Pebbles as his go-to snack. He enjoys watching baseball, names Tropic Thunder as his favorite movie, and says he can’t imagine a week without video games. He is also active in community volunteering, particularly with local events and parks programs in Valparaiso.
Jacob chose Vincennes University because of its size and academic offerings, providing an environment that fit both his educational goals and his opportunity to continue competing in track and field.
Coach Mangan on Jacob...
"Jacob is a strong addition to the mid -distance and long sprint group. He will be essential on both the 4x400 and 4x800 relay teams and a challenger for a leg in the Distance Medley relay."
