Bio
Michael Mangan was named Head Coach of the Trailblazers Men's and Women's Track and Field programs in the summer of 2025, and also assists with the Men's and Women's Cross Country teams. He joins VU with over 40 seasons of coaching experience, ranging from nationally recognized prep programs to college-level leadership.
Mangan joins Vincennes University from NAIA member Webber International University, where he served as Head Cross Country Coach beginning in 2021 and was later promoted to lead the Track and Field program in 2022. During his tenure, he implemented a performance-driven training model emphasizing long-term athlete development and technical refinement. His leadership helped strengthen recruiting, improve competitive consistency, and build team cohesion across both programs. His student-athletes not only developed as competitors but also as leaders. In 2025, javelin standout Jacob Wells was named the Sun Conference Men’s Champion of Character, recognizing integrity, sportsmanship, and leadership. Mangan departed Webber following the university’s decision to discontinue its Cross Country and Track and Field programs.
Prior to his time at the collegiate level, Mangan spent over two decades at Lake Braddock Secondary School in Burke, Virginia, where he served as Head Boys and Girls Cross Country Coach and Director of Track and Field from 2000 to 2021. During that span, his teams won 11 Virginia Large Schools State Cross Country Championships and produced numerous state champions and national qualifiers, including multiple appearances at Nike Cross Nationals, Foot Locker Nationals, and New Balance Nationals. He earned multiple Coach of the Year honors and was inducted into the Lake Braddock Hall of Fame in 2022.
Mangan’s programs earned national recognition for both competitive success and athlete development. His teams produced state and national championship performances across multiple events, including a Penn Relays Distance Medley Relay title in 2016 and a New Balance National Indoor Distance Medley championship in 2017. He also coached athletes who competed at the U.S. Olympic Trials while still in high school, highlighting his impact on elite-level development.
Before Lake Braddock, Mangan spent more than a decade at Langley High School in McLean, Virginia, serving as an assistant and head coach for boys and girls cross country and track and field from 1987 to 2000.
Mangan earned a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature from George Mason University and an Associate in Arts from Northern Virginia Community College. He also holds a USATF Level 1 Coaching Certification and has served in leadership roles within the Sun Conference coaching structure. Mangan and his wife, Rebecca, have two children: Abigail and Joseph.
