Bio
Malachi Black's most memorable moment as an athlete came when he advanced to the state championships in high school, an experience that fueled his desire to keep competing at a higher level. Known for his hardworking approach, Malachi keeps his personal and team goals simple but powerful: “work hard and build as a team.” He draws motivation from his mom, his kids, his girlfriend, and the memory of his best friend, who continues to inspire him daily. Guided by the saying “hard work beats talent,” he looks to embody consistency and resilience in everything he does.
Off the track, Malachi describes himself as reserved but driven, someone who finds joy in his role as a father and can’t imagine a week without time with his child. He admires world marathon great Eliud Kipchoge for his excellence and perseverance and considers Illinois standout Gavin Genisio one of the best athletes he has ever faced. His dream career is to become a police officer, reflecting his interest in service and structure, and he embraces the advice to “go with your gut” when making life decisions.
Malachi chose Vincennes University for the opportunity to compete, grow, and find a supportive environment in which to continue his journey. With his physical tools, competitive drive, and strong personal motivation, he is ready to make an impact as a Trailblazer on the course and on the track.
Coach Steigenga on Malachi...
"Malachi transfers in for his second year of cross country, and we’re looking for him to strengthen our top five. On the track, he brings strong middle-distance potential, with a background in both cross country and the 400. He’ll be an important piece in our relays at the national level."
