Bio

Motivated by her family and grounded in faith, Makayla 'Mak' Alexander plays every game with the same purpose: to honor the people who believe in her and to represent her hometown with pride.

Makayla’s basketball journey began at Butler Traditional High School, where she helped her team capture a regional championship her junior year—a memory she still calls the highlight of her athletic career. She recalls the excitement of being escorted by police to Rupp Arena and playing in front of classmates who were given a school-wide skip day just to cheer them on. That moment, she says, “made everything real.” Her motto, “Focus in the face of distraction,” continues to guide her both on the court and in life.

Off the court, Makayla’s personality shines just as brightly. She’s a lover of art—painting and drawing whenever she can—and admits she wishes she could free-hand sketch without a reference. Her favorite food is coconut shrimp, her late-night weakness is Nutella biscuits, and her dream car is a 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLE 53 AMG Coupe. She laughs that if she could trade places with anyone for a day, it would be Jay-Z, “because his wife is Beyoncé.” A self-described quiet but observant person, she says people are often surprised when they get to know her off the court—especially when they learn how much she loves singing in the shower.

Majoring in Sociology, Makayla plans to pursue a career as a lawyer or social advocate after basketball, driven by her desire to help others and create change in her community. Her faith plays a major role in her life; she’s active in her church’s prayer ministry, children’s choir, and usher board. Her advice to younger players reflects that same perspective: “Stay focused—some of the things that seem like your whole world now won’t even matter down the road.”

Makayla chose Vincennes University because of its supportive environment and the many opportunities it offers for academic and personal growth.
