Trailblazers Open Region Play with Road Win at Logan
CARTERVILLE, Ill. — The Vincennes University Women's Basketball team began Region 24 play with an authoritative defensive effort Wednesday night, defeating John A. Logan College 64–41 on the road to move to 6–4 overall and 1–0 in region play. The Trailblazers controlled the opening quarter 21–6, absorbed Logan's push in the second, and reasserted themselves after halftime to outscore the Volunteers 35–20 over the final two periods.
First-year Head Coach Nyla Johnson praised her team's focus and composure throughout the night, noting the strides they have made in their defensive discipline. "I'm proud of our focus," Johnson said. "We've been emphasizing good starts and good finishes, and I thought everyone who played today contributed positively. Overall, I'm proud of our team's defensive effort — we made a big jump in our attention to detail."
Sophomore wing Iris Comesaña-Varela delivered a standout performance on both ends, scoring a team-high 19 points on 7-of-13 shooting, including 5-for-9 from three, while adding four rebounds, three assists, and four steals. Johnson highlighted her impact, saying, "Iris was outstanding today on both ends. It's great to see her hit shots but also take pride in her defense. That's something we've challenged our team with, and it's nice to see a sophomore stepping up."
Sophomore forward Dženifera Rieksta provided efficiency inside once again, finishing with 16 points on 6-of-10 shooting and adding three rebounds. Sophomore guard Emani Washington continued her strong play of late with 13 points, eight rebounds, five assists, and four steals while sophomore guard Zion Hayes contributed 10 points, six rebounds, four assists, and a steal — complete performances by the backcourt combo that helped VU control tempo throughout the night.
As a team, VU shot 40.7 percent from the field and 37.0 percent from three (10-for-27), finishing with 21 assists on 24 made baskets. Defensively, the Trailblazers limited John A. Logan to 23.7 percent shooting and forced 24 turnovers, turning those mistakes into 28 points. By comparison, VU committed just 14 turnovers, which resulted in only 10 Logan points, and the Volunteers managed just eight transition points.
Johnson emphasized that limiting transition opportunities was a major point of emphasis — and her team executed it well. "We made a huge emphasis on transition points and turnovers," she said. "I thought we did a better job battling through our turnovers, and our giveaways didn't turn into a lot of transition points for them. John A. Logan thrives on that, so I'm excited about the growth we're showing."
With the win, VU begins Region 24 play with momentum and turns quickly to another region contest, this time at home. The Trailblazers return to the P.E. Complex on Saturday, December 13, hosting Lincoln Trail College at 2:00 p.m. ET in a doubleheader with the men's team. The matchup will also serve as Toys for Tots Night, where fans receive free admission or a concessions voucher with the donation of a new stuffed toy.
