Trailblazers Sweep Season Series with Danville
VINCENNES, Ind. — The Vincennes University Women's Basketball team continued its strong stretch at the P.E. Complex on Monday night, securing a 70–36 win over Danville Area Community College in non-region play. The victory marked VU's second win of the season against Danville after a narrow 73–71 road decision on Nov. 18 and lifted the Trailblazers to 8–4 overall.
VU set the tone early and never relinquished control, building a 19–7 advantage after one quarter and extending the margin to 36–14 by halftime. The Trailblazers maintained control throughout the second half, responding to a brief Danville push in the third quarter by closing the game with another strong defensive frame, holding Danville to 18.8 percent shooting from the floor for the night.
First-year head coach Nyla Johnson credited her team's preparation and defensive focus for the decisive performance. "I thought our attention to detail defensively was really good," Johnson said. "We knew they could shoot, so our focus was on scouting, discipline, and making sure we carried that over to the floor."
Sophomore post Dženifera Rieksta paced VU with an efficient 16 points on 7-of-12 shooting and added 10 rebounds to record a double-double. Sophomore guard Zion Hayes followed with 13 points and six rebounds, while sophomore guard Netala Dixon provided a lift off the bench with 11 points. Sophomore forward Meredith Mitchell also reached double figures with 11 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.
The Trailblazers' balance and activity showed throughout the box score. Iris Comesaña-Varela contributed nine points, nine rebounds, and seven assists, while Emani Washington chipped in six points and six assists. Johnson once again highlighted the unselfish nature of her group. "The best player is the open player — we say that all the time," she said. "Our kids really embody that. They don't care who gets the credit. They just want to win."
VU imposed its will on both ends of the floor, shooting 43.1 percent from the field while assisting on 23 of its 31 made baskets. The Trailblazers controlled the game inside, overwhelming Danville 48–10 in points in the paint and owning the glass by a commanding 64–29 margin. "Our focus and attention to detail are getting better," Johnson added. "This group is continuing to come together, and you can see it."
VU now turns its attention to its final game before the holiday break and the close of the 2025 calendar year. The Trailblazers will host Mineral Area College on Wednesday, December 17, at 5:00 p.m. ET in the P.E. Complex, looking to respond after a 70–63 loss in the first meeting with the Cardinals on November 4.
