Paint Dominance Powers VU Past Rend Lake
VINCENNES, Ind. — The Vincennes University Women's Basketball team continued its strong start to Region 24 play Saturday afternoon, earning an 83–64 road victory at Rend Lake College to improve to 10–6 overall and 3–0 in Region 24 play. The Trailblazers controlled the game from the opening quarter and never trailed, building separation with consistent scoring and balanced contributions across the lineup.
VU set the tone early with a 20–13 first quarter, extended the margin to 43–25 at halftime, and responded to Rend Lake's third-quarter push by outscoring the Warriors 23–17 in the fourth to close out the win. The Trailblazers shot efficiently throughout the afternoon, finishing at 50.7 percent from the field and 50.0 percent from three-point range (8-of-16) while generating consistent paint touches and ball movement.
Sophomore guard Netala Dixon led all scorers with 20 points on 7-of-9 shooting, adding four rebounds and two steals off the bench. Sophomore post Dženifera Rieksta followed with 11 points, six rebounds, and three assists, while freshman forward Lazarie Daniel added 10 points off the bench.
VU controlled the game inside, scoring 52 points in the paint while holding Rend Lake to 24. The Trailblazers also dominated the glass by a 48–24 margin, turning that edge into 19 second-chance points and limiting the Warriors to just six. Defensively, VU held Rend Lake to 36.1 percent shooting and 21.1 percent from three, forcing nine turnovers and keeping transition opportunities to a minimum.
First-year head coach Nyla Johnson pointed to paint touches, balance, and effort as keys to the win, while also noting areas for continued growth. "We did a good job with our game plan and getting the ball in the paint and working for each other," Johnson said. "I don't think we finished a lot of easy shots today, probably because we'd been off for a week, but I'm proud of our kids for staying ready. Even when shots didn't fall, our effort stayed consistent."
Johnson also highlighted the stabilizing contributions off the bench and the guards' ability to control the game. "I thought our guards did a really good job today, especially when some of our forwards weren't at their best," she said. "Jalyn (Davidson) and Makayla (Alexander) gave us great minutes, and that balance helped open things up for our drivers and kept us steady."
With the road win, VU remains unbeaten in Region 24 play, while stepping out of conference for its next contest. The Trailblazers return to action Friday, January 16, traveling to face Trevecca Nazarene University JV at 8:00 p.m. ET.
