VU’s Bats Explode, Earn Series Split at Home
VINCENNES, Ind. — Vincennes University Baseball earned a split in Monday's doubleheader against Schoolcraft College at Jerry Blemker Field, winning the opener 13–3 before falling 17–12 in game two. The Trailblazers move to 2-6 overall on the season.
Game One: Vincennes 13, Schoolcraft 3
Sophomore Jacob Allen delivered a complete-game performance on the mound, allowing three runs on seven hits while striking out four over 5.0 innings. Head Coach Chris Barney, in his 18th season leading the club, credited Allen's command and presence on the mound. "Jacob Allen pitched a complete game, and our offense really took advantage of their walks and hit-by-pitches," Barney said. "We were able to put up some crooked numbers and create separation."
After falling behind 3–0 in the third inning, the Trailblazers answered immediately with two runs before erupting for seven in the fourth and four more in the fifth to break the game open and win in five innings. VU totaled eight hits and drew nine walks in the win while playing error-free defense behind Allen.
Freshman Lucas Frack delivered the biggest swing of the game with a grand slam and finished with four RBIs. Freshman Matthew Everroad went 2-for-2 with a double, a home run, and three RBIs. Freshman Grady Hartman added three hits and three RBIs, and freshman Ethan Papalios drove in two runs. Sophomore Jevan Andrews also contributed an RBI in the balanced offensive effort.
Game Two: Schoolcraft 17, Vincennes 12
In the second game of the day, Schoolcraft built an early cushion and added eight runs in the fourth inning to take control. Despite the deficit, the Trailblazers continued to fight at the plate.
"We just didn't get off to a good start and kept allowing them to build on their lead," Barney said. "The team battled, and anytime you score 12 runs you expect a different outlook. We also need to play better defensively."
Vincennes pounded out 16 hits in the loss. Freshman Ryan Crawford went 3-for-5 with three runs scored. Hartman added three hits and two RBIs, while freshman Carson Reed collected three hits and two RBIs. Everroad scored three runs and drove in one. Freshman Tyler Singleton delivered a key bases-clearing double for three RBIs, and Andrews and sophomore Evan Doran each added RBIs.
Freshman Braeden Burton was charged with the loss, with sophomore Alex Wandersee, freshman Carter Williams, freshman Elijah Papalios, freshman Hayden May, and freshman Tyler Singleton also seeing time on the mound. VU committed four errors in the contest.
After splitting Sunday's doubleheader 1-1 against Schoolcraft and doing the same Monday, Barney noted progress despite the uneven results. "Overall, to go 2-2 at home against Schoolcraft isn't ideal, but it's an improvement from the previous week," Barney said. "We competed better, we showed we can put runs on the board, and now it's about tightening things up defensively and on the mound. The next couple of weekends will be a really good challenge as we bring in quality teams to prepare us for the MWAC (Midwest Athletic Conference) schedule."
Vincennes returns to Jerry Blemker Field on Friday, Feb. 20, for a single game against Joliet Junior College at 3 p.m. EST.
