Bio

Chris Barney enters his 18th season as head baseball coach for the Vincennes University Trailblazers in 2025. A cornerstone of Blazer Baseball, Barney made program history in 2010 by guiding VU to its first-ever appearance in the NJCAA Division II World Series, and he returned the Trailblazers to the national tournament in 2014, where VU secured its first World Series win. Barney was named NJCAA Region 24 Coach of the Year in both 2010 and 2014 for his efforts.

The 2024–25 season saw Barney lead VU on one of the most thrilling postseason runs in program history. After entering the playoffs as underdogs, the Trailblazers caught fire at the right time, reeling off eight consecutive postseason victories. VU kicked off their surge by winning their first Mid-West Athletic Conference/NJCAA Region 24 Pool B Championship—anchored by standout performances from sophomore pitchers JD Bowser (Mt. Carmel, Ill.), Carson Allen (Louisville, Ky.), and Eastin Whaley (Kokomo, Ind.), as well as freshman Jacob Hoyer (Georgetown, Ind.). That momentum propelled the Trailblazers into the NJCAA Central District Tournament, where they battled through the field and reached the semifinals before falling just short. The team’s surge from spring underdogs to national contenders energized the program and reinforced VU’s postseason legacy, culminating in a 28–34 overall record.

Barney’s tenure at VU is defined by a deep commitment to both athletic and academic excellence. His teams have produced three NJCAA All-Americans, three NJCAA Academic All-Americans, and one NJCAA All-American Gold Glove winner. Additionally, nine Trailblazers have earned All-Conference or All-Region honors under his leadership. Over 142 former players have gone on to continue their careers at four-year institutions, including 27 at NCAA Division I programs. Six players have gone on to play professional baseball following their time at VU, a testament to the player development culture Barney has built.

Barney brings more than 36 years of collegiate and professional coaching experience to the Trailblazer dugout. Prior to his time at VU, he spent 13 years as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at the University of Southern Indiana. His head coaching experience includes leading the Quincy Gems and Springfield Rifles in the Central Illinois League. He began his coaching career as an assistant at his alma mater, Tennessee Wesleyan College, and has since served as an assistant with the Mid-West Sliders (Michigan) of the Frontier League, Tusculum College (Tennessee), the Vermont Mountaineers of the New England Collegiate Baseball League, and St. Johns River College (Florida).

Off the field, Coach Barney is deeply rooted in the Vincennes community. He is married to Cindy Barney (née Meeks) of Oaktown, Indiana. They reside in Vincennes with their three children—Emily (18), Cohen (15), and Carson (13).
