Trailblazers Take Runner-Up Finish at Warrior 36
WEST FRANKFORT, Ill. – The Vincennes University Men's Golf team continued its strong early-season play with a runner-up finish at the Warrior 36, hosted by Rend Lake College at Franklin County Country Club. The Trailblazers posted team scores of 297 and 292 to close at +21 (589), securing second place in the six-team field. Illinois Central College claimed the team title with a two-round total of 571 (+3).
VU was led by sophomore Brock Naile, who delivered his best performance of the season. Naile fired rounds of 74 and 70 to finish at +2 (144) and claim fourth place overall. His final-round 70 featured a bogey-free stretch of ten consecutive holes from Nos. 1–10, capped by a birdies on the par-5 2nd, par-4 5th, and the par-5 7th that helped push him firmly into the top five. "Brock had his best tournament of the season with his fourth-place finish, and I was especially proud of his second-round 70 at one under par," Head Coach Dennis Chattin said.
Two freshmen made immediate impacts as well. Kollin Kelsey, competing in his first collegiate event, tied for ninth with rounds of 75 and 72 (147). Kelsey's steady closing stretch of nine straight pars on the back nine of round two preserved his top-10 finish. He was joined by fellow freshman Cameron Chattin, who matched him at +5 (71–76–147) and a ninth place overall finish. "Kollin had a very nice tournament in his first college event, and it was great to see him tie Cameron with a solid overall score," Chattin noted.
Sophomore Parker Steininger added rounds of 77 and 74 (151), tying for 16th. His second-round 74 was anchored by a steady one over par front nine that gave the Blazers another reliable counting score. Sophomore Landon Gardner posted rounds of 76 and 79 (155) to tie for 24th and round out the scoring for VU.
Chattin acknowledged that while the Trailblazers had hoped to play sharper, the weekend offered important positives. "Overall we were a little disappointed not to play better, but we definitely had bright spots," he said. "The greens had a lot of slope and caused us putting problems, but I don't want to use that as an excuse—we all play the same course. This was another chance for our freshmen to gain experience, and I think they handled it well."
The Trailblazers will return to action on Monday, September 22 at the Danville Area CC Fall Invite, played at Danville Country Club in Danville, Illinois.
