Trailblazer pole vaulter Matteo Capello sets new NJCAA Outdoor record at Sycamore Open
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The Vincennes University Track and Field teams had another record-setting performance at the Sycamore Open at Indiana State University Saturday when sophomore Matteo Capello broke the NJCAA Outdoor record for pole vaulting, reaching a height of 5.50 meters. Capello already holds multiple school records for both indoor and outdoor track events and broke the record for Indoor pole vaulting and Indoor Nationals record earlier this spring. “Obviously Matteo and his record were the highlight of the weekend,” VU Track and Field coach Chris Gafner said. “This has been a goal of his for a long time and we’re really excited for him to break it.”

Vincennes also had sophomore runners Kyra Young and Meagan Moreno qualify for Nationals at the open.
"Kyra just missed the cut at the Little State meet a couple weeks ago, she was just a second off the qualifying mark, so it was nice to see her do that."
The Trailblazers got third-place finishes out of the Men's 4x400 meter relay team, Anthony Campbell (High jump), Raymond Mix (Triple Jump) and Makinzi Meurer (Javelin), with Campbell and Meurer also placing in the Long Jump and Pole Vault respectively.
Ryan Golliher placed fourth in the men's hammer throw, posting a throw of 52.63 meters.
Kyle Stewart also placed fourth in the men's Long Jump, reaching a distance of 6.90 meters.
The Blazers will now look to prepare for the Olivet Nazarene Invitational in Bourbonnais, Ill. this Saturday, May 1. This event will serve in place of the Billy Hayes Invitational and Indiana University after that event was closed to any non-Big Ten schools.
The ONU Invitational is the final tune up for VU before they head to the NJCAA Division I Outdoor Nationals at South Plains in Levelland, Tex. May 11-13.
"Our jumps and sprints were a little off Saturday, so we're looking to improve those at Olivet this weekend," Gafner added. "We're still a couple weeks out from Nationals and still looking to improve so we're at our best there."
