VINCENNES, Ind – The 2021 NJCAA Division I Outdoor Nationals at South Plains College in Levelland, Tex. are fast approaching and the Blazers are putting the finishing touches on what has already been a fairly successful outdoor season. The Vincennes University Track and Field season got off to a hot start in the indoor season, with VU coming away with a pair of pole-vaulting National Champions in Makinzi Meurer and Matteo Capello. Capello then continued on this success in the outdoor season, setting a new NJCAA outdoor pole-vaulting record at the Sycamore Open in Terre Haute.
BOURBONNAIS, Ill. – Trailblazer javelin throwers Makinzi Meurer and Walter Martin moved their names to the top of the VU record books Saturday afternoon, posting a pair of new school records at the Olivet Nazarene Invitational. Meurer came away with a distance of 33.07 meters and she wasn’t done there, winning the pole vault event after reaching a height of 3.40 meters. Martin finished his day with a javelin win with a throw of 55.97 meters and a sixth-place finish in the hammer throw, posting a throw of 47.66 meters.
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The Vincennes University Track and Field teams had another record-setting performance at the Sycamore Open at Indiana State University Saturday when sophomore Matteo Capello broke the NJCAA Outdoor record for pole vaulting, reaching a height of 5.50 meters. Capello already holds multiple school records for both indoor and outdoor track events and broke the record for Indoor pole vaulting and Indoor Nationals record earlier this spring. “Obviously Matteo and his record were the highlight of the weekend,” VU Track and Field coach Chris Gafner said. “This has been a goal of his for a long time and we’re really excited for him to break it.”
OWENSBORO, Ky. – The 2021 Outdoor Track and Field season continues to roll along as the Vincennes University men’s and women’s teams headed south to Owensboro where the Trailblazers came away with a team win on the men’s side. The VU men’s team had an excellent showing in all events, but it was the field events where the Trailblazers really shined Friday. Vincennes picked up wins in the men’s high jump, long jump, shot put, hammer, discus, javelin and pole vault.
VINCENNES, Ind. – The Trailblazer track and field teams began their outdoor season by hosting the Bill Smith Open at Vincennes University. Vincennes hosted athletes from the University of Evansville, Marian, College of DuPage and Lincoln College. The Trailblazers came away with first-place finishes from, Jahod Fair (Men’s 400 Meter Hurdles), Ian Boit (Men’s 3000 Meter Steeplechase), Men’s 4x400 Meter Relay (Jahod Fair, Chase Knoblett, Damien Ross, Walter Tanui), Men’s High Jump, Men’s Long Jump (Anthony Campbell), Men’s Pole Vault (Cole Sumner), Men’s Triple Jump (Raymond Mix), Men’s Shot Put, Men’s Hammer (Ryan Golliher), Men’s Javelin (Walter Martin), Women’s 800 Meters (Kyra Young), Women’s 1500 Meters (Jacy Collins) and Women’s Pole Vault, Women’s Javelin (Makinzi Meurer).
PITTSBURG, Ks. – Trailblazer pole vaulters Matteo Capello and Makinzi Meurer were crowned 2021 NJCAA Indoor Track and Field National Champions Friday, with Capello winning the men’s pole vault event with a height of 5.40 meters which tied the VU school record Capello set earlier this year and broke the NJCAA Championship meet record. Meurer won the women’s event at 3.24 meters. Capello would also be named the USTFCCCA Midwest Region field athlete of the year.
VINCENNES, Ind – The Vincennes University Indoor Track and Field teams have looked strong this season, culminating in a men’s team win at the Kentucky Collegiate Indoor Invitational. “I think we’ve gone through the season about as well as could be expected,” VU Track and Field coach Chris Gafner said. “We came in not as well prepared as what we wanted to be, but everyone has been working hard and they’ve been progressing and we’ve put the pieces together to go into National ready to compete at a high level.”
MARION, Ind. – Sophomore Matteo Capello set a new NJCAA record in pole vaulting with a height of 5.35 meters Saturday at the Midwest Classic hosted by Indiana Wesleyan University. The Vincennes women’s 4000 meter distance medley relay team qualified for nationals as well as the team of Jacy Collins, Chloe Knepp, Kaitlyn Koenig and Kyra Young finished sixth with a time of 13:13.28.
