Trailblazers Fall in Road Test at Volunteer State
GALLATIN, Tenn. — The Vincennes University Women's Basketball team wrapped up its pre-Thanksgiving road stretch Tuesday night with a hard-fought 71–60 loss at Volunteer State Community College, moving the Trailblazers to 4–3 overall on the season.
Vincennes trailed 18–16 after the first quarter and went into the locker room down 34–29, but the Trailblazers responded with a strong third period, outscoring Volunteer State 15–12 to pull within 46–44 heading to the fourth. In the final frame, however, Volunteer State put together a decisive 25–16 surge to create separation and close out the game.
Vincennes faced an uphill battle offensively, particularly from the outside, where the Trailblazers struggled to find a consistent rhythm. VU shot 32.8 percent from the field and 13.6 percent (3-for-22) from three-point range, but was far more effective at the rim, generating 34 points in the paint. The Trailblazers' activity on the glass created extra possessions, leading to 16 second-chance points powered by 17 offensive rebounds.
Volunteer State, however, would leverage 15 VU turnovers into 19 points, while taking advantage of VU's poor perimeter shooting to score 17 points in transition, ultimately dictating momentum and creating the separation needed to secure the 71–60 decision.
Sophomore guard Netala Dixon led VU with 13 points on 6-of-10 shooting, adding seven rebounds, one assist, and three steals off the bench in 26 minutes. Sophomore guard Emani Washington joined her in double figures with 11 points, while freshman forward Meredith Mitchell provided a spark with eight points and five rebounds in 13 minutes.
After a few days off for the Thanksgiving holiday, VU will now return home for just its second contest of the season inside the P.E. Complex, hosting Lewis & Clark Community College on Tuesday, December 2nd, with tip-off set for 6:30 p.m. ET.
