DANVILLE, Ill. / VINCENNES, Ind. — Vincennes University Baseball split a four-game Midwest Athletic Conference series with Danville Community College on March 28–29, earning a pair of wins on Sunday after dropping both games on Saturday. The Trailblazers move to 13-21 overall and 7-9 in Region 24/MWAC play.
Game One — Danville 17, Vincennes 0
Danville opened the series with a dominant 17–0 win, limiting VU to just three hits. Freshmen Tannar Patterson, Ethan Papalios, and Ryan Crawford each recorded a hit for the Trailblazers.
Sophomore Eastin Whaley (2-3) took the loss after allowing five runs over two innings. Sophomore Grayson Reichert followed in relief, surrendering 10 runs over 2.2 innings, while sophomore Ben Goodaker, freshman Brody Wenzler, and freshman Deacon Lewis also saw time on the mound. Danville capitalized on 13 walks issued by the Trailblazers in the contest.
Game Two — Danville 18, Vincennes 14
VU responded offensively in game two but fell in a high-scoring 18–14 contest. The Trailblazers jumped out early with seven runs over the first two innings and later battled back with seven runs in the sixth to tie the game 14–14, ultimately sending the game to extra innings, before Danville scored five unanswered runs in the top of the eighth to earn the win.
Freshman Ethan Papalios led the offense with three hits in four at bats, including a double and a home run, scoring three runs and driving in three RBIs. Freshman Matthew Everroad added three hits, including a home run and a double, driving in four runs and scoring three, while freshman Lucas Frack collected three hits, including a double.
Freshman Tommy Holman added two RBIs, freshman Palmer Schiff went 2-for-3 with an RBI, and sophomore Jevan Andrews recorded two hits, including a double, and drove in two runs.
Sophomore Jacob Allen started on the mound, allowing seven runs over three innings. Redshirt sophomore Alex Wandersee worked one inning in relief, while freshman Drake Hoffa (1-1) took the loss after allowing seven runs over three innings. Freshman Tyler Singleton also appeared in relief.
"Very disappointing start to the weekend with Danville ," 18th-year Head Coach Chris Barney said. "We had some opportunities in both games to come up with big hits and came up short. I thought our kids battled in this one after game one, but again had a chance late and just couldn't finish it."
Game Three — Vincennes 16, Danville 3
VU bounced back in Sunday's opener with a commanding 16–3 victory, producing consistent offense throughout the game. The Trailblazers scored in every inning and totaled 19 hits, with five different players recording an RBI. Freshman Matthew Everroad led the way with a 5-for-5 performance, including a home run, and drove in seven runs.
Freshman Braden Casebier went 3-4 with four RBIs, while freshman Palmer Schiff recorded a 3-4 effort and two RBIs. Freshman Lucas Frack added two hits, and sophomore Carter Gricius and freshman Tannar Patterson each drove in a run.
Freshman Talan Meyers (2-2) earned the win on the mound, allowing two runs over six innings while striking out eight.
"To bounce back the way we did and play good baseball in all three facets shows what type of team we can be," Barney said. "It started on the mound with Talan Meyers, and we put together a complete game offensively."
Game Four — Vincennes 12, Danville 2
VU completed the series split with a 12–2 win in the finale, jumping out early and maintaining control throughout. The Trailblazers plated eight runs in the first inning and added four more in the third to take command.
Freshman Ethan Papalios led the offense with 3-3 effort, including a double and an RBI, while sophomore Jevan Andrews drove in three runs. Sophomore Evan Doran added two RBIs, freshman Palmer Schiff drove in two runs on two hits, and freshman Carson Reed recorded two hits and an RBI. Freshman Tannar Patterson finished with two hits and freshman Lucas Frack added a hit as Vincennes totaled 12 runs on 12 hits.
Freshman Kaagen Kendall (1-1) earned the win, allowing no runs over four innings with five strikeouts, while freshman Elijah Papalios worked one inning in relief.
"We played well defensively and put it all together," Barney added. "Extremely proud of how we responded and the way our freshmen pitchers stepped up to give us a chance to win."
VU returns to action Tuesday, March 31, hosting NJCAA Division I No. 24 Wabash Valley College in a non-conference matchup at Jerry Blemker Field. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. EST.
