CANTON, Ill. — Vincennes University Baseball earned a split over four games on the road against Spoon River College Saturday and Sunday in Midwest Athletic Conference play. The Trailblazers move to 17-32 overall and 10-18 in Region 24/MWAC competition.
Game One — Spoon River 5, Vincennes 3
VU dropped the series opener 5–3 in a game that turned in the middle innings. The Trailblazers struck first with two runs in the second inning, but Spoon River answered with three runs in the bottom half to take the lead. After a scoreless stretch, VU tied the game with a run in the fifth before Spoon River responded again with two runs in the bottom of the inning to regain control and hold on late.
Sophomore Evan Doran led the offense, going 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles, while freshman Tannar Patterson went 1-for-4 with a double. Freshman Ethan Papalios finished 1-for-3 with two walks and a double, and freshman Matthew Everroad added a hit, going 1-for-5. Freshman Palmer Schiff went 1-for-3 with an RBI, while freshman Dillon Warnick and sophomore Jevan Andrews each drove in a run as the Trailblazers totaled six hits.
On the mound, freshman Kaagen Kendall allowed three runs over 3.2 innings. Sophomore Grayson Reichert (0-2) took the loss after giving up two runs in 3.1 innings of relief, while freshman Drake Hoffa added a scoreless inning.
Game Two — Vincennes 14, Spoon River 9
The Trailblazers responded in game two with a 14–9 win, using a decisive third inning to seize momentum. VU plated two runs in the first before Spoon River answered with four in the second to take the lead. VU responded with a seven-run third inning to flip the game, then added insurance runs in the fourth and seventh to pull away and secure the win.
Freshman Ethan Papalios led the way, going 3-for-4 with a home, a double, and four RBIs, while sophomore Evan Doran matched him with a 3-for-4 effort, a double, and an RBI. Freshman Carson Reed added a strong performance, going 3-for-5 with an RBI, and freshman Braden Casebier went 3-for-5 with two RBIs. Sophomore Carter Gricius finished 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs, while freshman Dillon Warnick went 1-for-1 with an RBI. Sophomore Jevan Andrews went 1-for-3 with a triple and two walks, and freshman Matthew Everroad added a double as VU totaled 18 hits in the win.
Freshman Talan Meyers earned the win, allowing seven runs over 2.2 innings. Freshman Tyler Singleton and redshirt sophomore Alex Wandersee combined to stabilize the game, with Wandersee tossing 2.1 scoreless innings. Freshman Elijah Papalios added a scoreless inning to close out the win.
Game Three — Vincennes 13, Spoon River 9
VU carried momentum into Sunday's opener, earning a 13–9 win in another back-and-forth contest. Spoon River jumped out to a 2–0 lead in the first, and after VU responded with three runs in the second, Spoon River answered again to take the lead 5–3 through two innings. The Trailblazers then took control with three runs in the third and added runs in the fourth, sixth, and seventh to create separation.
Freshman Dillon Warnick led the offense with a 4-for-4 performance that included two doubles, while freshman Ethan Papalios went 3-for-5 with a home run and an RBI. Sophomore Evan Doran added a 3-for-5 effort with two doubles and two RBIs, and sophomore Carter Gricius went 2-for-4 with three RBIs. Sophomore Jevan Andrews contributed a 2-for-4 performance with three RBIs, while freshman Matthew Everroad added a hit and an RBI. Freshman Braden Casebier also recorded a hit as VU finished with 16 hits.
Freshman Carter Williams started and allowed five runs over 1.1 innings. Sophomore Jacob Allen (5-5) earned the win in relief, allowing four runs over five innings, and sophomore Cole Trevino secured the save with 0.2 scoreless innings.
Game Four — Spoon River 20, Vincennes 12
Spoon River claimed the series finale 20–12 in a high-scoring game that broke open late. VU jumped out early with four runs in the first and added four more in the fourth and three in the fifth to build a 11–4 lead. Spoon River responded with a seven-run fifth inning to tie the game before erupting for nine runs in the seventh to take control and secure the win.
Sophomore Carter Gricius led the offense, going 4-for-4 with a home run and four RBIs, while freshman Carson Reed went 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs. Freshman Matthew Everroad added a 2-for-4 performance with a home run and two RBIs, and freshman Ethan Papalios went 2-for-5. Freshman Dillon Warnick went 1-for-2 with three walks, while sophomore Evan Doran added a hit and two RBIs, and freshman Ryan Crawford contributed an RBI as VU totaled 13 hits in the game.
Freshman Drake Hoffa started and allowed two runs over two innings. VU utilized multiple arms in relief, but Spoon River scored seven runs in the fifth and nine runs in the seventh to pull away.
VU will close out the Midwest Athletic Conference regular season April 25–26 at home against John Wood Community College. The Trailblazers currently sit in sixth place in the league standings. The series will begin with a doubleheader on Saturday, April 25, with first pitch scheduled for 12 p.m. EST, followed by a doubleheader on Sunday, April 26, also beginning at 12 p.m. EST.
