Trailblazers Open Season with Runner-Up Finish at Red Wolf Invitational
RICHMOND, Ind. – The Vincennes University Men's Golf team opened the 2025–26 campaign in strong fashion, finishing second at the IU East Red Wolf Invitational, August 29–30 at Highland Lake Golf Course. The Trailblazers carded rounds of 279 and 285 to post a 12-under-par total of 564, finishing behind only host Indiana University East, which won the event at 21-under.
VU's depth was on full display as four golfers placed in the top six to earn All-Tournament honors. Sophomore Kadin Gibson paced the Trailblazers with rounds of 69 and 70 to finish runner-up at 5-under-par 139. His closing round featured a 3-under 33 on the front nine, highlighting the consistency that carried him to an All-Tournament honor. Freshman Cameron Chattin made an immediate impact in his collegiate debut, opening with a blistering 4-under 68 that included a 3-under 33 on the front nine. He followed with a 73 to finish tied for sixth at 3-under 141. Returning national championship qualifier Landon Gardner also tied for sixth after turning in rounds of 70 and 71. Gardner's second round started hot, as he went 4-under on his opening nine holes before settling at 1-under 71 for the day. Sophomore Brock Naile added stability with back-to-back even-par 72s, his second round a steady 36–36 split, to finish tied for 10th at 144.
Two more Trailblazers turned in solid performances to round out the lineup. Freshman Zach Trtan showed resilience after carding a 74 in round one that included a tough stretch on the par-5 13th. He bounced back in round two with an even-par 72, finishing tied for 13th at 146 and demonstrating the grit that Coach Chattin praised. Sophomore Parker Steininger provided early depth with an opening-round 74 that included an even-par front nine, before closing with a 77 to finish tied for 22nd at 151.
Head Coach Dennis Chattin commended the team's effort and consistency throughout the event. "I was really pleased on our first outing," Chattin said. "When a little adversity hit, they just dug in and battled. We look at bounce-backs—what you do after a bogey—and we had several of those moments. That's what it takes to be a really good team, and every player showed that." He also noted the rarity of a team finishing a two-round tournament without ever counting a score above par.
Chattin was particularly encouraged by the mix of returners and newcomers. "Cameron was in second place after day one with his 68, and Zach showed a lot of grit with four bounce-backs in his debut," he said. "Kadin, Landon, and Cameron all making the All-Tournament Team says a lot about our depth, and for us to finish second against all four-year schools is a strong showing."
The Trailblazers now shift their focus to the NJCAA Fall Preview, set for September 2–3 at Swan Lake Resort in Plymouth, Indiana—the host site of the 2026 NJCAA National Championship. "We're starting with a tough schedule, and that will tell us a lot about the upcoming season," Chattin said. "This tournament gives us confidence going into the National Preview where many of the top teams in the country will be competing."
