Trailblazers Close Fall Season with Fifth-Place Finish at Cobra Fall Classic
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – The Vincennes University Men's Golf team capped its fall season Monday with a steady showing at the Cobra Fall Classic, hosted by Parkland College at Lincolnshire Fields Country Club. The Trailblazers finished fifth overall in the nine-team field with a two-round total of +76 (315–319).
Head Coach Dennis Chattin praised his group's attitude and focus to close out the semester, noting that the team showed progress despite battling windy, chilly conditions that made scoring difficult. "It wasn't the finish we hoped for, but it was a great learning experience to end our fall," Chattin said. "Lincolnshire Fields is a demanding course, and we saw some stretches where we handled the conditions really well. We just didn't capitalize on enough opportunities. Still, I like the growth this group has shown over the past two months."
Heartland Community College, the No. 1-ranked team in the nation in the latest NJCAA/Clippd National Rankings, captured the tournament title at +49, followed by four-year Illinois Wesleyan University-B (+50) and Illinois Central College (+59), which is ranked No. 9 nationally. Host Parkland College—currently No. 27—finished fourth (+72), just ahead of Vincennes, which sits No. 23 in the latest rankings. The event featured seven Region 24 programs, providing an early preview of the competition the Trailblazers will see again in the spring.
Kollin Kelsey led Vincennes at +16 (81–79), which was good enough for a tie for 11th overall. Cameron Chattin (82-81) and Kadin Gibson (81-82) tied for 20th at +19, while Brock Naile placed 31st at +24 (81–87) and Landon Gardner finished tied for 34th at +26 (85–85). Competing individually, Parker Steininger provided one of the day's most memorable moments with a hole-in-one on the par-3 seventh hole during his opening round, going on to post rounds of 80–84 (+20) to close out his fall season on a high note.
Chattin noted that the team's middle stretches—holes six through thirteen—proved especially challenging but praised Kelsey's composure and improved course management. "Kollin really showed maturity today," Chattin said. "He's learning to grind through the tougher stretches and trust his game. The rest of the team followed that same mindset. We had good focus and support for one another, which was great to see."
VU's fall schedule featured a mix of invitational and match play events, including the team's home VU Fall Invitational and several tournaments against top-ranked Region 24 programs. Chattin emphasized that the experience gained this fall will pay dividends come spring. "We've seen a lot of competitive fields and quality courses, and that's exactly what we wanted," he said. "This group has good chemistry, and they're buying into the process. The second half of the year is about applying what we learned and being ready to compete for a conference title."
The Trailblazers will now turn their attention to offseason preparation before returning to competition in the spring season.
