Trailblazers Battle Conditions, Finish Eighth at Belterra Classic
FLORENCE, Ind. — The Vincennes University Men's Golf team competed against a strong NCAA Division II field at the Belterra Classic on Monday and Tuesday, hosted by Cedarville University at Belterra Golf Club, finishing eighth overall with a three-round total of +67 (309-306-304).
Entering the event ranked No. 27 in the NJCAA, the Trailblazers were the lone two-year college program in the field and showed resilience throughout the tournament, improving their team score in each round despite challenging, windy conditions.
Head Coach Dennis Chattin, an NJCAA Hall of Famer in his 22nd season, emphasized the team's fight and ability to respond throughout the event. "We were disappointed with the finish, but this tournament was really a series of comebacks," Chattin said. "The conditions were tough with the wind, and our guys kept responding. As a team, we improved each round, and that showed their toughness and willingness to compete."
Freshman Cameron Chattin led the Trailblazers, finishing tied for 23rd at +13 with rounds of 72, 77, and 77. Cameron's opening round highlighted his ability to recover, as he battled back from five-over through 11 holes to play four-under over his final seven holes, closing with a 72. "Cameron showed a lot of resilience," the elder Chattin said. "To turn that round around the way he did was impressive, and he continued to fight throughout the tournament."
Sophomore Brock Naile finished tied for 29th at +17 (78-72-80), delivering the team's low round of the second day with an even-par 72. Naile rebounded within the round, going two-under over his final nine holes to close strong. "Brock gave us a really good round when we needed it," the elder Chattin said. "He stayed patient and finished his round the right way."
Sophomore Landon Gardner placed tied for 33rd at +19 (81-77-74), showing steady improvement across all three rounds, including a strong final-round 74. "Landon continued to get better each round," the elder Chattin said. "That's what you want to see—learning the course, adjusting, and finishing strong."
Sophomore Kadin Gibson also demonstrated late-round improvement, finishing tied for 40th at +25 (81-84-73), highlighted by a team-best final-round 73. "Kadin really bounced back in the final round," the elder Chattin said. "That was a really solid finish and something he can build on."
Freshman Kollin Kelsey rounded out the lineup, finishing tied for 45th at +27 (85-80-82).
As a team, VU showed a consistent upward trend, shaving strokes off each round while navigating difficult scoring conditions. "We improved each day, which was important," the elder Chattin added. "I was proud of the way the guys stayed with it and didn't back down. That kind of perseverance will help us moving forward."
The Trailblazers will return to action April 12–13 as they host the VU Spring Invitational at Sultan's Run in Jasper, Indiana, their final event before the postseason.
