VU Men’s Golf Dominates in Match Play Home Debut
VINCENNES, Ind. – The Vincennes University Men's Golf team made the most of its lone fall home event, dominating the VU Fall Invitational with a 13.5–2.5 head-to-head victory over Lincoln Trail College Monday at Cypress Hills Golf Club.
The Trailblazers controlled the event from start to finish, winning seven of eight individual matches in the second round and earning decisive points throughout the day. The unique format, modeled after the Ryder Cup, emphasized match play rather than stroke play, with each Trailblazer paired against a specific Lincoln Trail opponent.
Head Coach Dennis Chattin praised his team's all-around performance. "We had an impressive 13.5 to 2.5 match play win over Lincoln Trail College, and I thought we played really well as a complete team," Chattin said. "Maybe we were inspired by the U.S. singles effort in the Ryder Cup on Sunday, but it was truly a great team performance. Match play is such a different format—you're not battling the golf course like in stroke play, you're battling the opponent in front of you. It takes focus, momentum, and the right mindset, and our guys responded exactly how we hoped."
Freshman Cameron Chattin set the tone early with a 5&4 victory in his opening match against Nathan Rich, while sophomore Parker Steininger delivered the day's most dominant performance, an 8&6 rout of Charles Dunford. Sophomore Kadin Gibson also impressed, closing out his first match 6&5 before adding a 3&1 victory in round two.
In the afternoon session, the Trailblazers surged, with Brock Naile (3&1), Kollin Kelsey (4&3), Landon Gardner (6&4), Steininger (3&1), Zach Trtan (4&3), Gibson (3&1), and Matthew Mills (4&3) all securing match victories.
Chattin also stressed the importance of staying locked in throughout the format. "We talked about the need to stay sharp early in the round, because in match play you can fall behind quickly, but momentum can change just as fast," he said. "We reminded the guys to expect to play all 18 holes no matter the lead and to always be ready for their opponent to hit a great shot. That mindset carried us today."
The Trailblazers will look to carry that momentum into next week as they compete in the MWAC Conference Tournament on Monday, October 6 at Atkins Golf Club in Urbana, Illinois, while also sending Cameron Chattin and Kadin Gibson to compete individually at the Golfweek "Put Me In Coach" Invitational, hosted by Ball State University at Delaware Country Club in Muncie, Indiana. The event will provide the duo with a chance to test themselves against some of the nation's top Division I golfers.
