Trailblazers Tune Up for Nationals at Sycamore Open
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. — Vincennes University Men's and Women's Track and Field wrapped up the regular season on Friday at the Sycamore Open, hosted by Indiana State University, as the Trailblazers posted multiple personal-best performances and school-record marks heading into the NJCAA Outdoor National Championships.
First-year Head Coach Michael Mangan praised the group's momentum entering postseason competition, saying, "This was a great final tune-up before nationals. A lot of athletes stepped up with strong performances at the right time."
Men
In the sprints, sophomore Devin Wilson closed his individual regular season on a high note, posting a personal-best 10.80 in the 100 meters. Freshman Travon Lane continued his breakout outdoor season, recording a personal-best 22.51 in the 200 meters before turning in a standout 48.04 in the 400 meters, finishing second overall and moving into 10th in program history. "Travon ran his most complete 400 of the season," Mangan said. "He closed with a huge final straightaway and competed extremely well against a strong field."
In the hurdles, freshman Robert Burns delivered personal-best performances in both events, running 15.70 in the 110-meter hurdles and 1:00.52 in the 400-meter hurdles.
The distance group was highlighted by another dominant showing from freshman Iheb Slimani, who won the 800 meters in a school-record and national qualifying time of 1:49.82. Distance Coach Tyler Steigenga praised Slimani's confidence and race execution, saying, "Iheb looked outstanding in the 800. Running against Division I competition, he stayed patient early, took control with 250 meters to go, and simply ran away from the field. It was a huge confidence boost heading into nationals."
Steigenga added, "He's won nine races this year and still hasn't reached his full potential. Other than his indoor 3000-meter school record, every PR he's set this season has come in a race he won."
Freshman Henry Dybsetter also posted a personal-best 4:35.21 in the 1500 meters, continuing the progression of the men's distance group.
In the field events, sophomore Marshawn Bradley recorded a personal-best 5.71 meters in the long jump. Freshman Preston Stokell added a personal-best 43.32 meters in the javelin, while freshman Jesse Huff recorded a personal-best 42.44 meters in the discus. "Preston saved his best throw for last in the javelin, and Jesse continues to show steady growth in the discus," Mangan said.
Women
Freshman Madison Senne turned in one of the top performances of the meet for the Trailblazers, recording a personal-best 4:54.39 in the 1500 meters, moving to eighth in program history and narrowly missing the national qualifying standard. Steigenga praised Senne's rapid development throughout the outdoor season, saying, "Madison was brilliant. She's been on a tear this outdoor season, and after narrowly missing a PR last week, she came back and dropped another huge chunk of time. She looks like a completely different runner than she did earlier this year."
In the sprints, freshman Cinnamon Harris posted a personal-best 15.12 in the 100 meters while also recording a personal-best 17.72 meters in the javelin.
Freshman Cabella Lemberg continued to show progress in the javelin as well, recording a personal-best 21.81 meters, which ranks 10th in program history. Mangan highlighted Lemberg's quick progression in the event, saying, "Cabella has only been throwing javelin for a couple of weeks, but she's already shown real potential and improved by nearly two meters this week alone."
Mangan reflected on the regular season as a whole, saying, "Both the men and women finished atop the Atlantic Region this season, and that says a lot about the effort and growth of this group. With so many freshmen contributing, the future of the program is really exciting."
The Trailblazers now turn their attention to the final meet of the season, the NJCAA Outdoor National Championships, hosted May 14–16 by New Mexico Junior College in Hobbs, New Mexico.
