Trailblazers Complete Owens CC Invite Sweep, Move to 6-0
PERRYSBURG, Ohio – The Vincennes University Volleyball team capped off an impressive weekend at the Owens Community College Invitational by winning both of their matches on Saturday, rallying past Muskegon Community College in five sets before sweeping Terra State Community College. With the victories, the Trailblazers went a perfect 4-0 in the invitational and improved to 6-0 on the season.
Match One: VU 3, Muskegon 2
VU showed resiliency in its morning matchup, storming back from a two-set deficit to defeat Muskegon 24-26, 18-25, 25-21, 25-22, 15-12. Sophomore Kenli Sullivan led the way with 21 kills and nine digs, while freshman Taryn Thuis was dominant in the middle with 14 kills on a .360 hitting clip and five blocks. Setter Rylee Edwards dished out 38 assists, and libero Adaline Eisenmann anchored the defense with 24 digs.
Head Coach Gary Sien credited his team's toughness in bouncing back. "We really had a difficult time getting our offense going the first two sets, but our group found a way to turn things around," Sien said. "We started serving tougher, got more touches on their attacks, and were able to transition into our offense. It was just a great team win, especially less than 12 hours after playing the night before".
Match Two: VU 3, Terra State 0
The Trailblazers closed the weekend strong, defeating Terra State in straight sets (25-18, 25-11, 25-12). VU hit an impressive .545 as a team, finishing with 40 kills to just four errors. Thuis once again led the charge, posting 10 kills on .833 hitting, while Sullivan added nine kills at a .562 clip. Freshman Allie Robinson provided a spark off the bench with eight kills on 11 swings, and setter Rylee Edwards tallied 24 assists and four service aces.
Sien noted that Terra's attack posed challenges early, but the Trailblazers' serving and adjustments at the net turned the tide. "They had a couple of very good hitters, but once we settled in, our serving really took them out of their offense," Sien said. "We had nine service aces and were able to get our block established. It was a great way to finish the weekend and get everyone involved".
The 4-0 showing marks VU's first perfect run at the Owens Invitational since 2023. Sien emphasized the growth of his young squad through the challenging environment. "This tournament is always tough with the level of competition, the noise, and the atmosphere," Sien said. "To go 4-0 here is special. We had two matches where we easily could have folded, but instead we showed a lot of heart and composure. It was a big weekend of growth for this team".
The Trailblazers will return home, as well as to Region 24 play on Tuesday, Sept. 2 at 7 p.m. (EST) as they face Lake Land College.
