Trailblazers Sweep Shawnee, Stay Perfect in League Play
VINCENNES, Ind. – The Vincennes University Volleyball team extended its Region 24 dominance Friday night with a straight-set sweep of Shawnee Community College inside the P.E. Complex. The Trailblazers rolled 25-12, 25-10, 25-18 to improve to 12-1 overall and 6-0 in Region 24 play, continuing to gain national attention after receiving votes in the latest edition of the NJCAA Division I Women's Volleyball Top 20 national poll.
Sophomore Kenli Sullivan continued her standout season, pacing VU with 13 kills on a .524 hitting percentage while adding eight digs and two block. Nicole De La Cruz was equally effective, finishing with six kills on .556 hitting and four service aces. Taryn Thuis made the most of her opportunities with four kills on .800 hitting and two blocks, while Paulina Krawczyk and Karen Kodi chipped in with three and five kills respectively. Freshman Ava Terrell provided a spark off the bench with three kills on .375 hitting.
VU's setters kept the offense humming, with Rylee Edwards turning in a double-double of 18 assists and 12 digs to go along with two aces, and Scarlet Konkel adding 12 assists, four digs, and an ace. Libero Adaline Eisenmann patrolled the back row with 13 digs, helping the Trailblazers to a 52-dig performance as a team. Overall, VU hit .277 as a team with 37 kills, while limiting Shawnee to just 40 total points across the three sets.
Head Coach Gary Sien credited his team for staying composed in stretches where Shawnee made runs, particularly in the third set. "We overall did a pretty good job of just minimizing our errors and not letting them go on big runs," Sien said. "They made things more difficult in the third, but we got the points when we needed them and closed it out. Matches like this also give us the chance to play everybody on the roster, and that's always valuable."
Sien also highlighted the balance in the lineup and the ability of different players to step up. "Kenli continues to produce at a high level and is one of the top players in the country statistically," he said. "Adaline did a great job leading our back row, Rylee gave us a strong all-around effort with a double-double, and Ava came in and gave us the spark we needed in that third set. It wasn't always perfect, but we made the plays that counted."
The Trailblazers (12-1, 6-0 Region 24) have a quick turnaround as they return to action tomorrow, Saturday, Sept. 13 at 12 p.m. (EST), when they host Wabash Valley College at the P.E. Complex.
