Trailblazers Slip in Region Clash at Frontier
FAIRFIELD, Ill. – The Vincennes University Women's Volleyball team continued Region 24 play Monday night on the road against Frontier Community College, falling in four sets (19–25, 25–20, 25–27, 22–25). The loss marks the Trailblazers' fifth straight, as VU slides to 23–7 overall and 11–2 in Region 24 play, now in second place behind John A. Logan College. The Trailblazers once again competed short-handed, playing their fifth consecutive match without standout freshman Kenli Sullivan (injury).
Taryn Thuis led the way with 14 kills and 3 blocks, turning in another strong performance at the net. Martyna Sadowska added 13 kills and 4 block assists, while Lili Palenczat contributed 11 kills and 8 digs. Rylee Edwards ran the offense efficiently with 29 assists, 9 digs, and a service ace. Adaline Eisenmann anchored the back row with a team-high 29 digs, and Nicole De La Cruz tallied 7 kills, 5 aces, and 4 total blocks.
Head Coach Gary Sien said that while there were positives, unforced errors proved costly throughout the match. "Taryn had a very good match, leading us in points and blocks, and Rylee ran a nice offense," Sien said. "Adaline was great defensively, and Martyna had some strong moments at the net, but unfortunately, that's about it. We had three hitters in the negative and another hitting even. You're not going to win many matches that way. We gave away over 45 points in errors — that's a full set's worth."
Sien noted that despite the team's defensive effort in slowing Frontier's top hitters, execution issues and missed opportunities made the difference. "Every set was close, and in the third we had a double-digit lead and let it slip away with a string of errors," he said. "If we just trade points there, we win that set and maybe the match. It's frustrating because we did a lot of things well, but the consistency wasn't there."
The tenth-year head coach also emphasized accountability and a sense of urgency as the Trailblazers look to regain their early-season form. "This has been a tough stretch in the schedule, but we can't let that define us," Sien said. "We have the talent. We just need to make better choices, play bigger, and be more mindful of the little things. Right now, we've lost control of first place, so there's no more room for error. We must win out the rest of our region games to have a chance."
The Trailblazers return home to the P.E. Complex on Wednesday, Oct. 15, at 7 p.m. EST to host Southeastern Illinois College in a key Region 24 matchup. The contest will also serve as Faculty and Staff Appreciation Night, as Vincennes University Athletics recognizes the continued support and contributions of the University's faculty and staff community.
