Trailblazers Sweep No. 1 Logan to Tighten Region Race
VINCENNES, Ind. – The Vincennes University Women's Volleyball team delivered its biggest win of the season Wednesday night, sweeping league-leading John A. Logan College 3–0 (25–22, 25–16, 25–18) inside the P.E. Complex. The victory lifted the Trailblazers to 26–8 overall and 13–3 in Region 24, pulling them within a half-game of first-place Logan (13–2) and just ahead of Lake Land College (12–3) in a tight region title race.
VU, which also swept Logan earlier this season in Carterville, Illinois, completed the season sweep in dominant fashion — controlling play at the net and limiting the Volunteers' offense throughout. The Trailblazers hit .236 as a team, behind one of their most disciplined blocking efforts of the season. Kenli Sullivan led the way with 13 kills, a .289 hitting percentage, and 16 total points, including three service aces and nine digs. Martyna Sadowska followed with 8 kills on .429 hitting, as well as three total blocks, and Taryn Thuis added 8 kills, 5 total blocks, and 11.5 points. Paulina Krawczyk chipped in 5 kills and 4 block assists, while Nicole De La Cruz and Karen Kodi each contributed valuable minutes in the middle.
Head Coach Gary Sien said the win represented a major step toward the form his team displayed earlier in the season. "This was a big win for us — one that really got us back to the level we were playing at for most of the year," Sien said. "We've had some rough spots, but this group hung in there, trusted each other, and stayed confident. It was great to see that belief again — in themselves and in each other."
Sien praised the team's blocking and defensive effort, which set the tone from the opening set. "Our blocking was huge tonight," he said. "We were very disciplined, very solid. We may have only had 15 blocks total, but they were quality touches that made a big difference. We forced Logan into tough swings all night, and our defense really played around our block. That's what we've been working to get back to."
The tenth-year head coach also highlighted the performances of several key contributors, including Dagmara Knap, who stepped in early for Nicole De La Cruz after an injury and made an immediate impact. "Dagmara hasn't had a lot of playing time this season because of injuries," Sien said, "but she came in, got a couple of key blocks, served well, and even picked up a few digs. It was great to see her step up in that moment."
Sien also credited sophomore setter Rylee Edwards, who finished with 15 assists, 3 digs, and steady leadership in the big home court victory. "Rylee was the calm in the storm," Sien said. "Her composure and leadership are invaluable to this team. She ran a smart offense and kept everyone settled when things got tense. That's the kind of presence you need from your sophomores."
Adaline Eisenmann once again anchored the back row with 19 digs, while Scarlet Konkel added 12 assists and solid offense in the rotation. Sien said the match was a complete team effort — one that could not have come at a better time. "This was the version of our team we've been working to get back to," he said. "The energy, the focus, the connection — it all came together tonight. To beat the top team in the region twice says a lot about this group's potential."
The Trailblazers now turn their attention to Sophomore Day on Saturday, October 25, at 12 p.m. EDT, when they host Lincoln Trail College in their final regular-season home match. VU swept the Statesmen 3–0 earlier this season in Robinson, Illinois, and will honor sophomores Rylee Edwards, Brooklyn Summers, Karen Kodi, and Martyna Sadowska for their contributions to the program.
